The historic Cruise Liner Terminal located in Tilbury played host to the 25th Jikishin Course and Competition. This was a notable first for the owners to allow in an outside Association and a privilege for Jikishin Ju Jitsu, headed by Chief Instructor Hanshi Brian Herbert, 8th Dan. Visitors, Students, Competitors alike were welcomed by the sights regaling us with its history and included the tapestry recording the arrival of the SS Windrush from the Windies; a model of the last working Paddlesteamer and other memorabilia marking the workings of Tilbury over the past 100 years.

Hanshi Brian handed over to Sensei Vince Bull, who acted as our accomplished compere, and was always on hand to guide us all through the events whilst informing all spectators of the mat activities. Sensei Vince introduced the Senseis who provided the teaching for the Course and these included: Senseis Ricky Izod, Graham Sargeant, 6th Dan, Ricky Alder, Eddie Garvey, Quint Smith, Sandy Mackay, Steve Cole 5th Dan, Earl Walker, Ray and Lorraine Egleton, 4th Dan.

Sensei Grant Wakeman, 4th Dan, had arrived in his Duracell suit (marvellous trousers, with the copper coloured bottoms) but had changed into his Blue Gi for the Warm Up. I saw strong people quail at this but everyone got going and was soon warm enough to enjoy the training.?

Junior SparringI wandered past the Black Belt mat and noticed Sensei Graham using Sensei Ricky Alder as uke as they shook hands and then Sensei Ricky Alder found himself on the mat...and in trouble...and yet the technique looked so innocuous. I would have joined them but for a Shoulder problem and a tummy full of sausage, bacon, egg, beans etc...

On the another mat, Sensei Ricky Izod was amazing the Browns and Purples with a succession of techniques involving his receiving Double Punches and his blocking, moving, controlling and throwing them. Masterly technique.

Those enjoying the techniques of Senseis Ricky and Graham included Senseis Dave Gadd, Gino Muscat, Andy Jones, Rula Metaxas, Steve Spicer, 3rd Dan, Martin Kidd, Ronan Winters, Charles Farrelley, James Gibson, Emma-Louise Dickens and so many more. Plenty of techniques for them to take away and practise in-club.

On the children?s mats, Sensei Eddie Garvey, Earl Walker, Lorraine Egleton and others were teaching as was Sensei Sandy Mackay, who used your writer as uke. The focus here was on encouraging a good foundation, with technique leading to Hip Throw and more. Simple things also pleased the children in showing how to escape from Wrist Grabs, Strangles and Chokes with ease but without injury. You could see the delight on their faces as they took these on-board and played with them.

All too soon, time slipped by and we broke for a short lunch. This also allowed us to take in the simple grandeur of the Hall, which had a large working area owing to the columns, which supported the fabric of the building and gave a superb working area. This looked absolutely great with all the mats in place and already deployed to allow the afternoon?s Competition.

It was during the lunch break that I realised that I was in need of tea and chocolate. I repaired to the foyer and was welcomed by Patti Humbles, wife of Sensei Colin, who had worked so hard in preparing lunches, tea, coffee, cake, chocolate etc. Patti was soon awash with others who had the same idea as me but I got there first.?

Upon our reconvening in the hall, the Competition began. In this, we had our Judges, Timekeepers, Dressers, Scribes, Referees smartly attired in Blazer, Tie, Polished Black Shoes. Step forward, Senseis Chris Sheppard, 6th Dan,Wayne Williams, Ann Kitchener, Ian Dingle, Sophia Allwood, Lee and Mark Bywater, Mick Morrison, Paul Lyus, Paul, Sally, Charlotte and Alex Bridger, Tony Park, Steve Dickens, Jackie Walker and more. Sensei Earl Walker, 4th Dan, Event Photographer took all the quality photos that he has already shared with Jikishin so remember to thank him for helping to make you look good.

Soon all grades and ages were engaged in Sparring, Ground-fighting, Empty Hand Kata, Weapons Kata, Pairs Demo and

Random Attack. It was soon very clear that a huge amount of work had gone into all areas. Clubs and more had taken great care to help their students compete. A simple way to notice this was to look at the children competitors and how well they behaved and how many showed extraordinary skill. I can say this as one little girl, Ruby Freeman performed Kama Kata, she later picked up the Gold Medal. I?m firmly of the opinion that she did it better than me... so, I really do need to do more practise.

You could hear cheers and more from the parents..oh yes...and the children as they competed. I was able to catch glimpses of Kristos, Kieran Metaxas-Garvey, Tyler Smith, Beau and others doing their best and gaining the medals to prove it.

In the Adult categories, I was able to watch Sensei Andy Jones flow through Sai Kata, and later 1st Blocking Kata. Sensei Emma-Louise Dickins showed Long Stance Kata and there was more. It?s always helpful to watch others compete as it allows one to view and improve one?s own efforts. One unnamed competitor intended to do Katana Cuts, and then dithered over Okinawan Bo Kata 2, Naginata and then settled for Okinawan Bo 2 only to step onto the mat and go into Okinawan Stances, Blocks and Strikes and then to Continuous Kumite....well, it could happen to anyone. Still, it added variety as a spectacle for the spectators.

For the Pairs Demo, there was a very good Samurai Kata by Senseis Rula and Martin, who won Silver. The Gold was rightly won by Ryu JuJitsu headed by Senseis Ray and Lorraine Egleton. Their students took to the mat; one with a crutch. This led to an attack and a defence scenario that showed correct Throws, Strikes, Punches, Kicks and more. A great demonstration of Ju Jitsu in a ?street? context. It also helps you explore your Ju Jitsu and the better to make it yours.?

Random Attacks was excellent viewing and this in part is owing to the Euro Budo impact, which brought forth the Jikishin Squad Team under Sensei Lee Bywater. There was very skilled technique allied to Effectiveness and Display. Sensei Sandy Mackay won Bronze, Julian Smith won a terrific Silver and The Great Andy Jones won Gold. It was one of his 4 medals won on the day.

The Sparring Final was a home event for Southend-On-Sea. Yep, James Nicholls and Lee More, if I remember correctly. Excellent technique, yes, it helps when you?ve been training Muay Thai in Thailand...and in great spirit from both finalists. A great way to end the day.

Final thoughts must got to Sensei Sarah Bull, 4th Dan, and sister Kayleigh Hargis, Colin Humbles. They did huge work in arranging the Hall and the results of the day and were presented with richly deserved flowers by Hanshi Brian. Sensei Colin did not get flowers...and he did work until 3AM to order the entries...and then correct them the following day...so you all owe him a Beer. If not Guinness, some Innis and Whatsit from the Steak House in Lakeside. They did fantastic work.

Our Heartiest Thanks to all, and here?s looking forward to 2016.
